Der 14-jährige Renton ist vom tristen Dasein in seiner Heimatstadt gelangweilt - bis er auf Eureka trifft. Diese fällt buchstäblich vom Himmel herab, und landet mit ihrem LFO, der Nirvash Type Zero, in seinem Zimmer. Ein turbulentes Abenteuer beginnt. Renton und Eureka wollen sich unbedingt treffen; sie sind auf der dringenden Suche nach einander. An Bord des Gekko-go ist die Erholungspause ganz kurz: Die Ereignisse überstürzen sich, während die Vergangenheit ihre furchtbaren Geheimnisse preisgibt.

Kritik

Kaum ein Genre spaltet Animefans so sehr wie die Mechas. Riesige Kampfroboter sind wohl auch nichts für jedermann, wie „Pacific Rim“ letzten Sommer im großen Stil gezeigt hat. Leider gehen durch diese Einstellung viele gute Serien in der Masse verloren, die zwar diesem Genre zugerechnet werden, aber sehr viel mehr zu bieten haben als spektakuläre Kämpfe. Eines dieser Mecha-Juwele ist „Eureka Seven“.

In ferner Zukunft leben die Menschen auf einem Planeten, der komplett vom Scub Coral, einem felsigen Gebilde bedeckt ist. Dieses hat auch Auswirkungen auf die Atmosphäre und bildet Energieströme, sogenannte Trapar in der Luft. Auf diesen Energieströmen können die Menschen mit Flugmaschinen fliegen oder mit LFOs surfen. LFOs sind Mechas, riesige humanoide Roboter, die von Menschen in ihrem Inneren gesteuert werden.
Der 14-jährige Renton Thurston lebt mit seinem Großvater, einem LFO-Mechaniker in dem kleinen Ort Bellforest. Rentons Vater Adroc kam bei der Erforschung des Scub Corals um und wird seitdem als Nationalheld gefeiert, doch Renton wuchs deshalb ohne Vater auf und ist nicht gut auf ihn zu sprechen. Er wurde von seiner Schwester aufgezogen, die jedoch auch bei der Forschungsarbeit verschwand. Nun langweilt er sich bei seinem Großvater, sein einziges Interesse gilt der Rebellengruppe Gekkostate rund um Holland Novak, die das Magazin ray=out veröffentlichen. Als eines Tages das Mädchen Eureka, Mitglied von Gekkostate, mit dem legendären LFO Nirvash in der Werkstatt der Thurstons bruchlandet, beginnt ein Abenteuer für Renton, denn er wird von nun an selbst an Bord des Schlachtschiffs Gekko-Go Seite an Seite mit seinem Helden Holland reisen.

Anders als man es vielleicht vermuten mag, legt „Eureka Seven“ den Fokus keineswegs auf die LFOs und die spektakulären Kämpfe in der Luft. Vielmehr handelt es sich um eine einfühlsame Coming-of-Age-Romanze zwischen Renton und dem geheimnisvollen Mädchen Eureka, die angeblich mit der Nirvash kommunizieren kann. Dabei entwickeln sich sensible Beziehungen zwischen den beiden und den restlichen Mitgliedern von Gekkostate und die Liebe zwischen den beiden jungen Menschen wird durch Eurekas Vergangenheit häufig auf die Probe gestellt.

Die Serie lebt von den zahllosen Fragen, die aufgeworfen und erst spät allmählich beantwortet werden. So ist die Welt, in der die Handlung spielt schon sehr fremd, aber auch die wahren Motive der Gekkostate oder der religiösen, von der Regierung verfolgten Gruppe der Vodaracs bleiben im Dunkeln. Daneben scheint das Militär ein Mädchen in ihrer Gewalt zu haben, die auf eine mysteriöse Art und Weise mit Eureka in Zusammenhang zu stehen scheint und der Oberbefehlshaber steht in Beziehung zu Holland, der auch vieles zu verheimlichen scheint. Hinter der bunten Fassade lauern Geheimnisse, die Rentons Weltsicht auf den Kopf stellen werden und er wird sich fragen müssen, wem er wirklich vertrauen kann und wer und was ihm wichtig ist.

Die vielen verschiedenen Charaktere an Bord der Gekko lassen über die 50 Folgen niemals Langeweile aufkommen. Die Crew ist unglaublich facettenreich, was ein fein akzentuiertes Spiel zwischen den Personen zulässt und ganz Gekkostate sehr authentisch wirken lässt. Allen voran überzeugt die mysteriöse Eureka, die angeblich im zarten Alter von 14 Jahren bereits Mutter von drei Kindern sein soll, die sie alleine auf der Gekko großzieht. Als Renton damit konfrontiert wird, ist er erst einmal perplex, wird jedoch von Holland sogleich gefragt, ob es für ihn und seine Liebe zu ihr ein Problem wäre, wenn Eureka bereits Kinder hätte. Schon bald erfährt er, dass Eureka diese Kinder während eines Kriegseinsatzes adoptiert hat, weil sie ihre Mutter getötet hatte. Jetzt muss er nicht nur Eurekas Herz gewinnen, sondern auch von den Kindern akzeptiert werden. Eine ungewöhnliche Patchworkfamilie entsteht.

Die Farbgestaltung der Serie und der Zeichenstil unterscheiden sie deutlich von anderen Genrevertretern. Durch die Farbgebung und die Gestaltung der Kleidung der Charaktere und Orte kann der Zuschauer diese schnell zuordnen und bestimmte Eindrücke damit verbinden. So bleiben die reptiliengleiche Form und die giftgrüne Farbe der Gekko-Go einem schnell im Gedächtnis. Die einzelnen Mitglieder von Gekkostate lassen sich durch ihre Kleidung bereits einigermaßen einschätzen. Beispielsweise ist der blau gekleidete Moondoggie mit seiner unverwechselbaren Mütze und den viel zu weiten Hosen ein sehr ruhiger Charakter, der Renton anfangs zur Seite steht, als er sich den Respekt der Mannschaft und seinen Platz auf dem Schiff noch erarbeiten muss. Allgemein wird das Bild von bunten und knalligen Farben bestimmt, sogar in den Kämpfen haben die Trapar, auf denen die LFOs surfen ein neongrünes Leuchten und die Explosionen sind in ein ungewöhnliches Rosa getaucht. Trotz dieses bunten Aussehens sind die Kämpfe ernst und mitunter auch sehr blutig. Hier vermeidet „Eureka Seven“ den Fehler, den viele Mecha-Serien begehen und verharmlost den Krieg keineswegs. Renton muss sich auch damit auseinandersetzen, dass es sich nicht um einen Sport oder ein Spiel handelt, sondern um Krieg und er Menschen tötet, wenn er einen Mecha ausschaltet.

Fazit

Hier bietet sich eine einfühlsame Coming-of-Age-Romanze, die zu jedem Zeitpunkt blendend unterhält und durch vielschichtige Charaktere überzeugt.
Bevor man das Mecha-Genre endgültig ignoriert, sollte man neben „Neon Genesis Evangelion“ auch „Eureka Seven“ gesehen haben und dann entscheiden, ob einem die Geschichten rund um riesige Kampfroboter wirklich nicht gefallen. Fans des Genres werden die Serie so oder so schon kennen und lieben.
